The shop
Independent, not a dealer. Four technicians at 820 Matzinger Rd in north Toledo, off I-75. NAPA Truck Care Center, Cummins certified, International certified, a qualified DOT inspector on staff, CARB Clean Truck Check testing, and a Hunter HawkEye XL alignment system. Medium- and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, Class 4 through 8, every make. Engines, transmissions, brakes, air, electrical, AC, suspension, welding and fabrication, trailer structure.
Monday through Friday, 8 to 5. Closed weekends. There is no after-hours service, so there is no after-hours call.
The job
The senior diagnostic technician is the person the other techs bring the hard ones to. The work:
- Diagnose engine, aftertreatment, electrical and driveability faults across makes, and prove the fault before the part is ordered.
- Perform and document 49 CFR 396.17 annual inspections, or be willing to qualify under 396.19.
- Run repairs end to end: diagnosis, the quote to the service writer, parts, the repair, the road test, the write-up.
- Help the other techs get better at diagnostics.
- Take the service truck to a customer in the Toledo area during shop hours when the job calls for it.
What we look for
- Several years of heavy-duty diesel diagnostic experience. Cummins, Detroit, Paccar, International and Cat experience all count.
- ASE Medium-Heavy Truck certifications, or the experience to test for them. We support getting them.
- Comfortable with aftertreatment: DEF, SCR, DPF, the inducement ladder and how to clear it properly.
- Your own hand tools. Diagnostic equipment is in the shop.
- A CDL is a plus for road tests and the service truck, not a requirement.
- Honest with the customer, straight with the service writer, careful with the write-up. The customer gets a call with what is wrong, what it costs and when it is done before we start, and that call is only as good as the diagnosis behind it.
